Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed
Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Crown Repair: The Chesapeake Owner’s Guide
HeatShield crown repair in Chesapeake typically runs $650-$1,200 installed, depending on chimney size and how much of the original crown has deteriorated. We stock HeatShield-compatible materials on our trucks and can usually complete the job in a single visit once we’ve done a camera inspection to confirm the damage. Most Chesapeake homeowners discover the problem after spotting water stains on the ceiling near their fireplace or noticing sand-like debris collecting in the firebox, both signs that the concrete crown on top of the chimney has cracked and is letting moisture straight down the flue.
Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield’s crown repair system isn’t model-specific the way a liner or cap might be. The product is a refractory crown resurfacing compound, applied as a slurry over the existing concrete crown to seal cracks and restore the proper slope for water runoff. What matters is the condition of your current crown and the dimensions of your chimney top, not a serial number.
To identify what you need, we measure the crown’s length, width, and overhang, then check whether the concrete is sound enough to accept resurfacing or has degraded past the point where a repair will hold. HeatShield recommends a minimum thickness of 1.5 inches of sound concrete beneath the new layer. We’ve seen plenty of Chesapeake chimneys, especially the older brick homes in Great Bridge and South Norfolk, where decades of freeze-thaw cycles have left the crown too thin for a successful HeatShield application. In those cases, we pour a new crown using professional-grade materials rather than resurface a substrate that won’t last.
We’re an independent service provider with no affiliation to HeatShield. We choose their resurfacing system when the existing crown is a good candidate because it performs well in our coastal Virginia climate, where salt air and humidity accelerate ordinary concrete deterioration. For chimneys that need full replacement rather than repair, we also work with DuraFlex and Gelco crown systems.
Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing
- Water stains on the ceiling near the chimney breast. The crown’s primary job is to shed water away from the flue opening. When cracks develop, water follows the path of least resistance down the chimney’s interior and eventually finds your drywall. In Chesapeake’s spring storm season, a compromised crown can move a surprising amount of water in a single heavy rain.
- Crumbled concrete or sand collecting in the firebox. This is the crown literally disintegrating. The concrete mix used in many original crowns wasn’t formulated to withstand decades of thermal cycling, and once the surface starts spalling, the deterioration accelerates. We see this frequently on homes built in the 1970s and 1980s around Hickory and Deep Creek.
- Visible cracks or missing chunks when viewed from the ground or roof. Hairline cracks are normal; cracks you can slide a quarter into are not. The freeze-thaw cycles that hit Chesapeake every January and February expand water in those cracks and wedge them wider each season.
- Rust stains on the exterior brick below the crown. These indicate water is getting behind the crown and running down the chimney face, carrying iron deposits from the flue liner or firebox with it. Left unaddressed, this moisture compromises mortar joints and leads to costly tuckpointing.
- Damp or musty odor from the fireplace even when not in use. A properly sealed chimney stays dry inside. Persistent moisture creates an environment for mold and mildew in the smoke chamber, and that smell doesn’t resolve with air freshener.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Scope | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| HeatShield crown resurfacing (sound substrate) | $650-$950 |
| Partial crown rebuild with HeatShield finish | $850-$1,100 |
| Full crown replacement (concrete pour + cap) | $1,000-$1,400 |
| Level-2 camera inspection with photo report | $89 (credited toward repair if booked) |
What drives the range: crown size, accessibility (steep roof pitches or second-story chimneys require additional safety setup), and whether the existing concrete can be salvaged. Our $89 Seasonal Tune-Up includes the camera inspection, and we credit that full amount toward any repair over $250. Every crown job comes with our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing, no arguing, and we document the before condition with photos you’ll see before we lift a trowel. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s where DIY goes wrong.
What you can check yourself: from the ground with binoculars, look for visible cracking, missing chunks, or pooling water on top of the chimney after rain. From inside, shine a flashlight up the flue and look for dampness or debris. These observations help us understand what we’re walking into, and you’re welcome to share them when you call.
Where DIY becomes a problem: crown repair requires working at height on a roof surface that may be steep, possibly wet, and certainly unforgiving. The HeatShield compound itself must be mixed to exact consistency, applied at proper thickness, and tooled to create the correct slope and drip edge so water sheds rather than pools. We’ve been called to redo homeowner crown repairs where the material was applied too thin, sloped toward the flue instead of away from it, or sealed over active leaks that simply continued underneath. The result is always more expensive than doing it correctly the first time.
We’re background-checked, uniformed technicians who complete most jobs in a single visit. Call (757) 590-6579 and a live person will answer, any hour, any day. We’ll schedule a camera inspection, show you exactly what we find, and give you upfront pricing before any work begins.
FAQs
With proper application over sound concrete, a HeatShield resurfacing typically lasts 15-20 years in our climate. The key variable is the substrate beneath it; we’ve seen premature failure when homeowners opted to resurface over concrete that was already too deteriorated to support the new layer. Annual inspection catches problems before they spread. Call (757) 590-6579 to schedule yours.
It depends on what the camera inspection reveals. If the concrete is at least 1.5 inches thick, structurally sound, and the steel reinforcement isn’t exposed or rusting, HeatShield resurfacing is usually the right call. Once the reinforcement is compromised or the concrete has lost more than 30% of its mass, we recommend pouring a new crown. We show you the photos and explain which category you’re in, with no pressure either direction.
Most HeatShield crown resurfacing jobs are completed in 3-4 hours, including setup and cleanup. Full crown replacement takes a full day because the concrete needs time to set before we can tool the final slope and install the cap. Either way, you’re looking at a single visit from our crew. We’ll be there when we say.
We carry HeatShield-compatible refractory compounds on our trucks, along with DuraFlex and Gelco alternatives for situations where a different product better serves the chimney. For standard Chesapeake chimney dimensions, we don’t need to order materials. Unusually large crowns or custom configurations might require a 24-48 hour lead time, which we’ll tell you upfront when you call.
If the chimney’s right, you won’t hear from me until next season. That’s the point.
