Gelco Flue Liner Replacement Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Flue Liner Replacement: The Chesapeake Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Gelco-compatible flue liner replacement in Chesapeake, with most jobs running between $2,800 and $4,500 installed depending on chimney height and diameter. Gelco’s 316Ti stainless steel liners and their ProFlex smooth-wall series are what we see most in the field, and we carry common diameters from 5 to 8 inches on our trucks. Most Chesapeake homeowners discover the problem mid-winter: a smoky fireplace, water dripping down the flue, or a chimney sweep’s camera revealing cracked terra cotta or a corroded liner wall that can’t safely carry exhaust gases.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco flue liners fall into two main product families, and knowing which one you have changes both the part number and the installation approach.

The Gelco ProFlex smooth-wall liner is the premium line, recognizable by its continuous welded seam and .006-inch 316Ti stainless construction. ProFlex carries a lifetime warranty when installed with their proprietary top plate and is rated for all fuel types, including coal and oil. We see these most often in the older two-story Colonials around Great Bridge and Hickory, where homeowners converted from oil to gas and needed a liner that could handle corrosive condensate.

The standard Gelco corrugated liner uses the same 316Ti alloy but in a flex configuration with a .005-inch wall. It’s more forgiving on offset chimneys, which matters in Chesapeake’s 1970s and 80s ranch homes where the fireplace and chimney top rarely line up straight. The corrugated profile also allows for slightly tighter bends, though the tradeoff is a rougher interior surface that collects more creosote.

Identification is straightforward if the original installer left paperwork. Without it, we measure the flue diameter at both top and bottom (they can differ by a half-inch in old construction), check the collar stamp near the top plate, and verify fuel type compatibility. Gelco’s part numbering uses diameter-first format: a 6-inch ProFlex is GPF-600, while corrugated is GCF-600. We do not use generic substitutes on ProFlex jobs; the warranty requires genuine Gelco components for the top plate, connector, and cap. On standard corrugated replacements, we sometimes source equivalent 316Ti from Olympia Chimney if Gelco lead times stretch past two weeks, but we tell you before we order.

Signs Your Gelco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing

  • Smoke backing up into the room on startup. A compromised Gelco liner loses its draft capacity. Gaps between liner sections, or a liner that has pulled away from the top plate, let room air mix with flue gases and stall the draft. In Chesapeake’s humid shoulder seasons, this happens more often because cold, dense exterior air sits on a warm, lazy column inside.
  • Water stains on the firebox ceiling or adjacent wall. The Gelco top plate uses a silicone compression seal that hardens after roughly 15 to 20 years in Virginia’s UV and freeze-thaw cycle. Once cracked, rainwater runs between the liner and the original clay flue, finding its way to the fireplace throat or the framing nearby.
  • White or orange powder on the liner walls. That’s chloride corrosion from burning unseasoned wood or, in oil conversions, sulfuric acid residue eating the 316Ti. Gelco’s titanium content resists this better than 304 stainless, but it is not immune. We catch this during Level-2 camera inspections; by the time you see staining on the firebox, the liner wall is often thinned past safe thickness.
  • Chunks of clay tile in the fireplace or cleanout. When a terra cotta flue fails behind a Gelco liner, the debris has nowhere to go but down. This usually means the original liner was undersized or improperly supported, and the clay is collapsing onto it. The Gelco liner itself may still look intact, but it’s now carrying load it was never designed for.
  • A strong, sharp odor when the fireplace is not in use. A perforated liner lets creosote-laden air leak into wall cavities or the smoke chamber. In summer humidity, that creosote reactivates. If you smell it, the liner has a breach somewhere between the smoke chamber and the top plate.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Component Price Range (Chesapeake)
Gelco ProFlex liner, 5″ to 6″ diameter, single story $2,800 - $3,400
Gelco ProFlex liner, 7″ to 8″ diameter, or two-story $3,400 - $4,500
Gelco corrugated standard liner, 5″ to 6″ $2,200 - $2,900
Top plate replacement (Gelco OEM required for warranty) $280 - $420
Chimney cap with spark arrestor $180 - $350
Insulation blanket (required for solid-fuel, recommended for gas) $340 - $480

What drives the range: chimney height from roofline to top, whether we need to remove an existing cap or storm collar, and if the flue has offsets that require extra labor to pull the new liner through. Every estimate includes the Level-2 camera inspection, photos you can see, and a plain-English verdict before we schedule. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. Our 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation in writing; if it’s not right, we make it right, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

There is one thing a Chesapeake homeowner can safely check: look up the flue from the firebox with a flashlight. If you see daylight where the liner meets the smoke chamber, or rust streaks on the firebox walls, you have useful information to tell us when you call. Do not climb the roof to inspect the top plate yourself. The flashing and seal are easy to disturb, and a fall from a two-story Colonial in Great Bridge is not worth the savings.

Pulling a Gelco liner is not a weekend project. The liner arrives in a coil that must be fed down from the top while a second person guides it past the damper and smoke shelf. Offsets require a pull rope, a cone, and patience; forcing it kinks the stainless and voids the warranty. The top plate must be cut to fit your exact flue dimension, sealed with high-temp silicone, and torqued to spec. We complete most Gelco replacements in a single visit because we have done it hundreds of times and carry the tooling. Call (757) 590-6579 and we’ll walk through what you’re seeing. If the chimney’s right, you won’t hear from me until next season. That’s the point.
