Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed
Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Famco Damper Repair: The Chesapeake Owner’s Guide
Famco damper repair in Chesapeake typically runs $280-$450 installed, depending on whether your fireplace needs a throat damper plate, pivot arm assembly, or full frame replacement. We stock the common Famco throat damper sizes on our trucks, and most swaps are finished in a single visit. Russell Haines and our crew have been working on Famco hardware in Chesapeake homes for years, including plenty of the older brick fireplaces over near Great Bridge where these dampers see heavy winter use.
Most Chesapeake homeowners figure out their Famco damper is shot when smoke starts backing into the living room on the first cold night, or when they feel a draft they can’t chase down. Sometimes it’s rust you spot from below, or the handle just spins without catching. Here’s what you need to know to get it sorted.
Which Famco Models This Applies To
Famco built throat dampers in several series over the decades, and the parts are not interchangeable across lines. The cast-iron C series (common in 1980s and 1990s Chesapeake construction) uses a 5/16-inch pivot pin and a 7- or 8-inch plate width. The lighter stamped-steel S series, which you’ll find in many Great Bridge and Greenbrier-area homes from the same era, carries a 1/4-inch pin and narrower plate. The frame depth matters too: C series frames sit 3 inches deep in the smoke chamber, while S series frames are closer to 2-1/4 inches.
We carry both OEM Famco replacement plates and pivot kits, plus quality aftermarket equivalents from Copperfield that match the specs and carry the same warranty. Aftermarket makes sense when the OEM part is back-ordered, which happens more than it should with older Famco hardware. We check the frame condition before quoting: if the frame is cracked or the pivot pin boss is wallowed out, a plate-only replacement will fail inside two seasons. That’s a conversation we have on site, with the camera running, so you can see what we see.
To identify your model, look for a stamped code on the damper handle or the plate edge, visible with a flashlight from the firebox. No stamp? We measure pin diameter, plate width, and frame depth during inspection. Either way, we’ll match it right.
Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing
- Smoke rolls back into the room on startup. The plate is warped, cracked, or failing to seat flat in the frame. In Chesapeake’s humid summers, cast-iron Famco plates often develop a slight bow that seals poorly once the metal cools and contracts.
- Cold downdraft even when the damper is “closed.” The plate edge or frame seat has corroded, leaving gaps. We see this on beach-area homes in Chesapeake where salt air accelerates rust on the stamped-steel S series.
- Handle turns freely or pulls out with no resistance. The pivot pin has sheared or the linkage has detached. Famco’s cast-iron C series pins can seize, then snap when forced.
- Visible rust flakes or orange staining on the firebrick. Surface rust has progressed to scaling. Chesapeake’s freeze-thaw cycles in winter speed this up once moisture gets behind the plate.
- The damper sticks fully open or fully closed. Debris, creosote buildup, or a bent pivot arm is binding in the frame. In homes with unlined chimneys, which we still find regularly in Chesapeake’s 1960s and 1970s neighborhoods, mortar crumbs fall onto the plate and jam the works.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service | Price Range |
|---|---|
| Famco damper plate replacement (OEM or aftermarket) | $280-$380 |
| Pivot arm / linkage repair | $180-$260 |
| Full frame and plate replacement | $380-$450 |
| Level-2 camera inspection with photo report | Included with repair |
The range depends on three things: whether we’re replacing the plate only or the full frame, whether the smoke chamber needs minor tuckpointing to seat a new frame, and whether we use OEM Famco or a Copperfield equivalent. We quote upfront, before any work starts. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. Every Famco damper repair we complete carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing, no arguing.
DIY or Call Us?
There is one safe check a homeowner can make: with the firebox cool and empty, shine a flashlight up and confirm the plate moves when you work the handle. If it doesn’t, or if you see obvious cracks, stop there.
We do not recommend homeowner replacement of a Famco damper. The plate sits at the top of the firebox throat, typically 6 to 8 feet up, and the pivot pin must be driven out with the frame supported to avoid dropping debris into the smoke chamber. More importantly, a misaligned plate or bent frame creates a gap that will vent carbon monoxide into the living space during a fire. We’ve been called to fix DIY attempts where the plate was installed backward or the wrong pin size was forced in. The second repair always costs more than calling us first.

FAQs
A properly maintained Famco cast-iron throat damper typically lasts 20 to 30 years in Chesapeake’s climate, though homes within a few miles of the salt air may see closer to 15 on the stamped-steel models. Annual sweeping removes moisture-trapping creosote and extends the lifespan. Call (757) 590-6579 to schedule an inspection and we’ll tell you where yours stands.
Sometimes: a seized pivot pin can be freed and lubricated, and minor surface rust can be cleaned. But a warped, cracked, or thinned plate cannot be restored to safe function, and we won’t patch a frame with structural cracks. We document what we find with camera photos and give you a plain-English verdict on repair versus replacement. Call (757) 590-6579 for a free estimate.
Most Famco damper replacements are completed in 90 minutes to two hours, including the Level-2 camera inspection and photo report. Full frame replacements in tight smoke chambers may run closer to three hours. Our technicians carry the common Famco sizes and arrive prepared to finish in one visit. Call (757) 590-6579 to book.
We stock the common Famco C-series and S-series replacement plates, pivot pins, and linkage kits on every service vehicle, along with Copperfield equivalents that match the specs. If your model is an uncommon size or vintage, we order it with next-day availability and return to complete the job. Call (757) 590-6579 and we’ll confirm compatibility before we dispatch.
