DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Chesapeake Owner’s Guide

We stock and install DuraFlex-compatible chimney caps for most common series, with typical installed pricing running $280-$520 in the Chesapeake market depending on flue size and whether the crown needs resealing. Most DuraFlex cap replacements we book are completed in a single visit, and we carry the common 6-inch, 7-inch, and 8-inch stainless collars on every truck. Homeowners usually discover the problem after a storm blows through Hampton Roads and they spot water stains on the firebox ceiling, or when squirrels start using the flue as a highway because the mesh has rusted through at the corners.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex chimney caps fit their proprietary flexible stainless liner systems, but the cap itself must match both the liner diameter and the termination type. The common series we see in Chesapeake homes are DuraFlex SW (smooth wall) and DuraFlex Pro, typically in 6″, 7″, or 8″ diameters. The part number is stamped on the underside of the existing cap collar if you can read it without climbing; otherwise, we measure the flue opening and liner termination height during our inspection.

Here’s where owners get tripped up: DuraFlex caps are not interchangeable with standard Gelco or Olympia Chimney top-mount caps without an adapter collar. The DuraFlex termination has a specific rolled-edge engagement that seats into the liner top. We’ve found that some aftermarket caps marketed as “universal” fit poorly on DuraFlex terminations and leak within two seasons. We source OEM DuraFlex caps or direct-fit equivalents from Copperfield that match the original engagement geometry. For most Chesapeake installations, the OEM cap runs $85-$140 in material cost, with the adapter-style aftermarket running slightly less but requiring more labor to seal correctly.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Water dripping into the firebox after rain. The cap’s crown seal has cracked or the collar has pulled away from the flue tile. In Chesapeake’s humid summers, that moisture mixes with creosote and starts corroding the smoke chamber from the inside out.
  • Rust streaks running down the chimney exterior. The 304 stainless mesh on older DuraFlex caps eventually pinholes where salt air from the Elizabeth River corridor accelerates oxidation. Once the mesh goes, the cap is decorative at best.
  • Animals or nesting debris in the flue. The spark arrestor mesh has corroded or the cap has shifted in high winds, opening a gap. We pulled a full squirrel nest from a DuraFlex cap in Great Bridge last March where the mesh had completely dissolved at the weld points.
  • Draft problems or smoke backup on startup. The cap’s internal baffle has warped from over-firing or the clearance height is wrong for the flue diameter. DuraFlex caps need proper headspace to draw correctly; a cap installed too low chokes the flue.
  • The cap is visibly tilted or missing after a storm. The masonry screws or compression band have failed. Chesapeake sees enough wind coming off the river that a loose cap becomes a projectile, and the bare flue left behind is an open invitation for water damage.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Component Price Range (Chesapeake)
DuraFlex OEM cap (6″-8″) $280-$380 installed
DuraFlex cap + crown reseal $380-$520 installed
Adapter collar if non-DuraFlex cap selected Add $45-$75
Level-2 camera inspection with photo report Included with cap replacement

What moves the price: flue diameter, whether the crown needs fresh sealant, and if the flue tile top is sound enough to anchor to. We don’t guess. Our technician photographs the crown and flue top, shows you the images, and gives you the exact number before any work starts. The 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation in writing. If water gets past our cap, we come back. No paperwork to dig up, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s no high-tension spring or electrical hazard on a chimney cap, but there is a fall hazard, and there’s the problem of knowing whether you actually solved it. A homeowner can safely check from the ground with binoculars for visible tilt, missing mesh, or rust streaks. You can also verify from inside that the damper closes fully and no debris has fallen into the smoke shelf.

What goes wrong with DIY: wrong cap geometry for the DuraFlex termination, improper sealant that cracks in the first freeze-thaw cycle, and stripped tapcon holes in soft crown mortar that let water migrate behind the new cap. We’ve re-done enough homeowner installations where the cap looked straight but leaked at the back where nobody thought to check. If the chimney’s right, you won’t hear from me until next season. That’s the point. Call (757) 590-6579 and we’ll match the part, show you the photos, and put it on once.
