Famco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Chimney Cap Installation: The Chesapeake Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Famco chimney caps across Chesapeake, with most replacements running $340-$620 installed depending on flue size and whether your cap is a standard single-flue or a custom multi-flue model. For common Famco galvanized and stainless steel caps in the 8″-13″ range, we typically have the right fit on the truck and can complete the swap in a single visit. You’ll usually notice the problem after a hard rain when water spots appear on the firebox floor, or when you spot rust streaks running down the brick from a cap that’s lost its seal.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco builds chimney caps in two main series that we see in Chesapeake homes: the standard galvanized line and the premium 304 stainless steel line, both available in single-flue, multi-flue, and outside-mount configurations. The critical measurement is your flue’s outside dimension, not the chimney crown width. A 9″×13″ flue takes a different cap than a 10″×10″ even when the crown looks identical.

Most Famco caps carry a stamped model number on the underside of the lid. If rust has eaten that away, measure the flue opening and note whether your flue is clay tile, poured concrete, or a metal liner. That determines which mounting skirt or clamp style you need. We carry both OEM Famco caps and quality equivalents from Gelco and Copperfield that match the same specs. For coastal Chesapeake properties within a few miles of the Elizabeth River or the Intracoastal Waterway, we generally recommend stepping up to stainless steel. The salt air here accelerates galvanized corrosion by roughly half compared to inland Virginia markets.

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Is Failing

  • Rust stains on the chimney brick or siding. Famco galvanized caps in Chesapeake typically show surface rust within 7-10 years, and once the factory coating is compromised, the steel underneath deteriorates fast. Those orange streaks mean water is already getting past the cap and running down your flue.
  • Water in the firebox or a musty smell after rain. The mesh screen on Famco caps can sag or separate from the frame over time, creating a gap that lets direct rainfall enter. In older Great Bridge and South Norfolk homes with original caps, we see this screen failure more often than actual lid damage.
  • Mesh screen clogged with creosote or debris. Famco’s standard mesh is 5/8″ weave, which traps leaves and pine needles from Chesapeake’s loblolly pines. A clogged screen blocks draft, causes smoky fires, and can force carbon monoxide back into the house.
  • Cap is tilted, loose, or missing entirely after wind. Famco single-flue caps rely on a tension-fit mounting bracket that can fatigue. We’ve retrieved caps from yards off Battlefield Boulevard after nor’easters, and the underlying bracket is often still half-attached and sharp-edged.
  • Animals or nesting material visible in the flue. A compromised Famco cap, especially one with bent or missing mesh, invites squirrels, raccoons, and the occasional chimney swift. We pulled a full squirrel nest from a Deep Creek cap last October. The homeowner had no idea the mesh had rusted through on one corner.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Cap Type Typical Installed Price What’s Included
Famco single-flue galvanized (8″-13″) $340-$420 Cap, mounting hardware, sealant, labor, disposal of old cap
Famco single-flue stainless steel (8″-13″) $480-$580 Cap, mounting hardware, sealant, labor, disposal, 90-Day Done Right Promise
Famco multi-flue or outside-mount (custom size) $520-$620+ Field measurement, cap, custom fit, sealant, labor, disposal, 90-Day Done Right Promise

What moves you up or down within these ranges: flue height above the crown (taller needs an extended skirt), whether the existing mounting bracket is reusable, and if the crown itself needs resealing before the new cap goes on. We check that crown condition during every cap replacement. No point in seating a new cap on crumbling concrete.

Every Famco cap installation includes our Level-2 camera inspection of the flue interior, photos you can see, and a plain-English verdict on what we find. The 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the work in writing. If it’s not right, we come back. No paperwork, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a short list of things a homeowner can safely check from the ground with binoculars: whether the cap is present, whether it’s sitting level, and whether you can see obvious rust or screen damage. Do not climb the roof to verify. Chesapeake’s split-level and two-story homes common in Greenbrier and Hickory put the chimney well above safe ladder height, and the ridge lines here collect morning dew that makes asphalt shingles slick until mid-morning.

Where DIY goes wrong: ordering the wrong cap size based on crown measurement rather than flue dimension, failing to seal the mounting bracket to the crown (which channels water straight into the brick), and discovering too late that the flue tile itself is cracked and needs repair before any cap will seal properly. We carry the full Famco size range, the right sealants rated for 400°F flue temperatures, and the camera to verify the flue condition before we commit to the install. Most Famco cap replacements in Chesapeake take under 90 minutes once we’re on site.
