HeatShield Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Damper Repair: The Chesapeake Owner’s Guide

We stock and install HeatShield-compatible damper repair assemblies throughout Chesapeake, with most completed in a single visit. Installed pricing typically runs $340-$620 depending on whether the damper plate, frame, or both need replacement. We carry the common HeatShield sizes on our trucks and can usually match your model same-day.

Most Chesapeake homeowners discover their HeatShield damper has failed on the first cold morning when smoke rolls into the living room instead of up the flue. Others notice the damper plate won’t stay open, won’t fully close, or the handle mechanism has gone slack. In the older homes near Great Bridge, we see this often after decades of seasonal expansion and contraction have worn the hinge pins and frame seals.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield produces damper assemblies across several product lines, and matching the right repair part matters. The most common we encounter in Chesapeake are the standard top-sealing dampers for masonry flues and the direct-mount dampers for factory-built chimneys. Your existing unit should carry a stamped model number on the frame rim or a foil label on the damper housing. If corrosion has eaten the label, we measure the flue opening and frame depth on site.

HeatShield dampers are built to tighter tolerances than generic hardware-store units. The silicone-rubber gasket on their top-sealing models compresses to roughly 3/16 inch, which is why an exact OEM-spec replacement gasket matters. A standard aftermarket gasket at 1/4 inch will leave gaps that leak conditioned air year-round. We source factory-spec HeatShield gaskets and hardware, though we also stock quality equivalents from Gelco and DuraFlex where they cross-reference accurately. Hearthstone Chimney Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with HeatShield.

The gotcha to check: HeatShield changed their frame rail width in the mid-2010s. A post-2015 damper plate will not seat properly in a pre-2015 frame, and the difference is only 3/8 inch. We verify this measurement before ordering any part.

Signs Your HeatShield Damper Repair Is Failing

  • Smoke back-drafting on startup. The damper plate is not sealing fully against the frame, either from a warped plate or hardened gasket. Combustion gases take the path of least resistance, which becomes your living room.
  • Handle turns but the plate does not move. The linkage between the operator mechanism and the damper plate has corroded or the cotter pin has sheared. This is common in Chesapeake’s humid summers when the flue cap seal has also deteriorated.
  • Plate sticks open or closed regardless of handle position. Hinge pins have galled or the frame has distorted from creosote buildup and thermal cycling. Forcing the handle will snap the operator cable.
  • Visible daylight around the damper plate when closed. The silicone gasket has aged out, typically after 12-18 years in Virginia’s climate with its hot, wet summers and freeze-thaw winters. A gasket-only replacement is possible if the plate and frame are sound.
  • Rust flakes falling onto the firebox floor. The galvanized frame is failing from the inside out, usually where creosote has pooled. At this stage, the frame needs replacement, not just the plate.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Repair Scope Typical Range
Gasket replacement only (plate/frame sound) $340-$420
Damper plate + gasket, existing frame $450-$550
Full damper assembly (plate, frame, operator) $520-$620
Additional flue cap replacement if seal failed $180-$260

These are installed prices for Chesapeake, including the Level-2 camera inspection we perform before quoting. We document the damper condition with photos you can see, then give a plain-English verdict on what actually needs replacement. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. Every HeatShield damper repair carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it’s not right, we come back. No paperwork, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can safely check whether the damper plate moves freely and whether daylight shows around the seal. Use a flashlight from the firebox looking up. If you see the gasket has pulled away or the plate is visibly warped, you’ve found the problem.

What we do not recommend: removing a stuck damper plate yourself. The plate is heavy cast iron or steel, often lodged by creosote deposits, and the firebox throat is an awkward workspace. A dropped plate can crack the firebrick. More critically, disturbing the frame without inspecting the flue liner can mask a separate issue. We check both. Call (757) 590-6579 and we’ll match the part, install it, and show you the camera footage of the completed seal.
